Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) clarified that the increase in fine for illegally modifying tourist buses is applicable to other vehicles in the state.
Earlier, MVD increased the fine from Rs 5000 to Rs 10,000 after an accident in Vadakkencherry left nine dead and several injured.
In 2019, the central government brought amendments to the Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill and increased the fine to Rs 1000. However, MVDs in various states decided not to increase the fine due to protests from the public.
But with the recent mishap in Vadakkencherry and increasing number of cases registered for illegal modifications, the state government has finally decided to increase fine to Rs 10,000. Meanwhile, MVD will continue taking strict action against violators who modify vehicles and use illegal LED bulbs, high-frequency sound devices and others.
