Thiruvananthapuram: The transport department has directed to intensify vehicle checking in the state from Thursday onwards. The direction was given by the transport secretary and the transport commissioner.

As there are some confusions regarding the fine to be levied for traffic rule violations, it has been directed to leave such cases to the court instead of charging fine.

The fine for traffic rule violations was increased according to the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act. However, vehicle checking was being conducted only for the purpose of spreading awareness recently.

The officials made it clear in a meeting convened by the transport minister that rules were being violated as checking was conducted for awareness only. Following this, the transport department directed to intensify vehicle checking.

The department is waiting for the notification of the central government that gives states the power to determine the fine for traffic rule violations.
