Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition Leader VD Satheesan here on Thursday came to the fore backing veteran Congress leader AK Antony’s soft Hindutva remarks.

“It is not our job to say that all Hindus are BJP supporters. A majority of Hindus are secular. It is not right to portray anyone who wears saffron clothes, applies tilak on the forehead or goes to a temple as a BJP activist,” said Satheesan.

“I am happy that a senior leader like Antony has said the same. What he said is the right politics,” he added.

Congress Working Committee member AK Antony on Wednesday said that those who visit temples or apply tilak on their foreheads should not be sidelined in the name of soft Hindutva.

"If a Hindu friend visits a temple or applies tilak on the forehead, we shouldn't conclude he/she is a person who has endorsed soft Hindutva. Such judgemental attitude will only help the Modi regime retain power," he said.

The leader made the remarks while speaking on the occasion of the 138th foundation day of the Indian National Congress.

Meanwhile, K Muraleedharan MP expressed support for Antony's observation while Rajmohan Unnithan MP opposed the remarks.

“Congress is not a communal organisation. It cannot take the stance of including or excluding any particular section but rather includes all kinds of people,” Unnithan said.
