Kozhikode: Kerala forest department booked popular snake catcher Vava Suresh for displaying a snake in a public event here.
He took a cobra to the Kozhikode Medical College to exhibit as part of his lecture for the nursing department’s continuing education. Suresh kept the cobra on the podium while delivering his lecture about snake bites.
The forest department conducted a primary inquiry into the complaint that Suresh handled the cobra unscientifically. Later, they booked him under sections 2 and 9 of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. He will be soon served with notice to appear for questioning.
In February this year, he was in a critical condition from a cobra bite suffered during catching the snake in Kottayam. He was asked to undergo forest department’s training to catch the snakes, but he reportedly refused. Suresh is notorious for not using safety gears. He has suffered bites several times, allegedly because of the reluctance to use ‘scientific methods’.
However, officials said that after the February incident, he had agreed to abide by the recommendation of the department.
