Varkala: The Fisheries Department has thrown open its modern aquarium facility at Varkala to visitors. Minister M Babu inaugurated the aquarium in the presence of the Kahar MLA. The minister, in his inaugural speech, expressed hope that the work on the Chilakkur Fishing Harbour would take off in the next financial year. He also said that fish seed production has been given a new lease of life by the current government and several new hatcheries have been opened.

ADAK Executive Director U S Sajeev presented the report and several others, namely, municipal councillor A R Ragasree, Fisheries Additional Director K M Lathy, CostFord Joint Director Sajan, Fisheries South Zone Joint Director V Manomohanan, Dr A Bijukumar, H Salim, Advocate Sudarshanan, Varkala Sajeev and Advocate S Krishnakumar spoke at the event.

The welcome speech was by Fisheries Director Mini Antony and vote of thanks was delivered by Hatchery Manager E Mujeeb. The winner of the award for the best pearl-spot hatchery, Sunil Kumar from Vennikode was also felicitated at the function.

The four-storey aquarium is situated on the beach along the Prawn Hatchery at Thiruvambady. The Agency for Development of Aquaculture, Kerala (ADAK), was responsible for the 3500 sq ft aquarium showcasing wonders of the water world. The building was constructed on eco-friendly lines under the guidance of CostFord at an expense of Rs 4 crore. The aquarium showcases rare species of freshwater and seawater fish along with ornamental species.
