Thiruvananthapuram: A high-level meeting held here in the backdrop of the Vadakkencherry accident listed out several measures to check the violations of the private bus industry and curb road accidents caused by it.
Transport minister Antony Raju announced a three-tier system to check violations of rules of the contract carriage and private buses.
Each officer in the RTO will be given charge of a selected number of buses. The officer will be responsible for the violations of those buses. A secondary check by Deputy Transport Commissioners will also be in place. Besides, the transport commissioner will lead a 'super check', the minister said.
Other recommendations:
- Increased surveillance with the help of the excise department to find workers who use intoxicants
- Fine for alteration increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 and will be charged separately for each violation
- Permission for buses without GPS will be cancelled
- Buses not following the colour code will be ceased
- Order allowing free movement for vehicles registered in other states will be cancelled. Such vehicles have to pay separate tax in Kerala, from November 1 onwards
