Vadakara: A cop has been receiving praise after his timely intervention saved a woman passenger’s life at the railway station here on Sunday. VP Mahesh, head constable of Vadakara station and a native of Kannur’s Pinarayi, is winning hearts for the brave and selfless act.

The incident occurred at around 5:40 pm. Mahesh was on duty, inspecting the coach for differently-abled persons in the Nagercoil-Mangalore Parasuram Express. He was done with it and the train started to move. At that time a girl tried to board the moving train. Though Mahesh warned her not to board, she jumped from the platform. However, she slipped down the handlebar.

Onlookers helplessly cried out and Mahesh rushed to help her. He attempted to pull her back to the platform. However, in her frenzy she tightened her grip on Mahesh, causing both of them to lose balance. Even then, Mahesh quickly regained balance and pulled the girl back to the platform. Both landed in the platform without sustaining any serious injuries.

The loco pilot, who by now had learnt of the situation, halted the train. Mahesh’s attempt was highly lauded by the onlookers and was shared on social media along with his picture and a heartwarming note.

The railway station had witnessed such mishaps in the past. The woman passenger, who is also a student in Mangalore, was strictly warned and she departed in the same train.
