Thiruvananthapuram: Velikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan aka VS, the senior-most politician, former Kerala chief minister and the most popular bureaucrat of the state, turns 98 on Wednesday.

The pandemic outbreak and age related ailments have restrained him from active politics for the last two years. But the popular leader of Kerala is watching everything silently from his son VS Arun Kumar’s residence in Barton hill here.

VS needs support to get up and walk around, as he suffered a stroke. He listens to the newspaper read for him daily and watches news on TV at times. V S Arun Kumar said that VS was sad when he saw the news of the landslides, excess rain and other natural calamities that occurred in the last two days. He watched it for a long time.

There will be no functions on his birthday except for a lunch with the family members. No visitors were allowed after the Covid-19 outbreak. Even the ministers requested to visit him but as per the advice of the doctor, no one was allowed to visit.
