V Muraleedharan is Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs
New Delhi: The only BJP representative from Kerala in the second Narendra Modi government, V Muraleedharan, has been appointed as the Minister of State for External Affairs; and for Parliamentary Affairs.
The 60-year-old from Thalassery is an MP from Maharashtra. Former external affairs secretary S Jayashankar is the Minister of External Affairs while Pralhad Joshi is the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs along with Coal and Mines.
Earlier, MPs from Kerala including E Ahamed and Shashi Tharoor have been ministers of state for external affairs. Moreover, Vayalar Ravi had been a minister of overseas Indian affairs.
External affairs is a very important portfolio for a new face in the ministry. It is learned that Muraleedharan will be given the charge of overseas affairs ministry.
It is the responsibility of the parliamentary affairs ministry to maintain a good relationship with the allies and opposition to ensure smooth functioning of the parliament.
At present, Muraleedharan is the only Malayali in the second Modi government. During the first Modi government, Alphons Kannanthanam was the minister of state for tourism (independent charge).
