Pathanamthitta: Railways has made travel easier with Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) app that allows one to purchase tickets online without having to wait at a station ticketing counter. Henceforth, general coach tickets can be bought anywhere for any given distance. For example, a person in Pathanamthitta can buy a ticket to go from Kozhikode to Kannur, but must travel within a three hour period.

Until now, a person could only use this app to buy tickets from stations within 25 kms radius of their present location. This limitation has now been removed. The new reform came in response to the significant number of people purchasing tickets from the UTS app. Express trains/ superfast general tickets, seasonal tickets and platform tickets can be bought using the app.

Over-counter ticket sales have reduced by 30% with the increase of in-app ticket purchases. Due to the popularity of the app, a QR code system has also been implemented at major railway stations. The app has also been modified to include tickets from halt stations of passenger trains. This move has been widely welcomed by travellers.

In the Thiruvananthapuram division, there has been a 6.7% increase in the number of passengers who booked tickets using the app when compared to last year. There has also been a 3.8% increase in the travellers making use of the ticketing vending machines installed at stations.
