Uthra’s mother unhappy over court verdict; says she expected death sentence

Kollam: Following the verdict in the sensational snakebite murder case, Uthra’s mother, Manimeghala has expressed dissatisfaction over the court’s verdict that gave Suraj double life sentence. She said that she expected a death sentence, the highest possible punishment. She also added that this approach by courts may lead to the rise in such heinous crimes. She said that she will approach the Kerala High Court with an appeal against the verdict.

The district additional sessions court pronounced on Wednesday the quantum of punishment for Suraj, who murdered his wife Uthra by inducing snakebite. He has been awarded double life sentence and slapped a penalty of Rs 5 lakh. He was also awarded 10 years and 7 years of imprisonment in two other cases for causing hurt by means of poison and destroying evidence.

Suraj has to serve the double life sentence after completing 17 years in jail. The sentencing will not run concurrently and Suraj may have to spend his complete life in jail. The court also mentioned about similar cases while pronouncing the verdict. Kollam additional sessions court judge Justice M Manoj pronounced the verdict. Suraj was earlier found guilty of the crime under Section 302, 307, 328 and 201.
