Up tp 50 percent subsidy in increased electricity bill: Pinarayi Vijayan

Electricity is free for consumers using up to 40 units of electricity per month with a connect load of below 500. Such consumers will be granted free electricity without considering their consumption, the CM said.

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that there is nothing wrong in the increased electricity bill amount during the lockdown period. He was addressing the media after a coronavirus review meeting here on Thursday.

“It’s natural that electricity consumption increased. But in the backdrop of the complaints raised, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has been directed to investigate the matter. Certain decisions have been taken in this regard,” he said.

Electricity consumption usually increases between February and May. The lockdown also increased electricity consumption. As KSEB could not collect meter reading during the two months, the reading was taken together after four months.

There are no changes in tariff structure or electricity rate. But as numerous complaints were raised, the matter was examined. Based on this, those who are facing problems in paying the amount have been allowed to pay it in installments. In the backdrop of COVID-19, none of the electricity connections will be disconnected over nonpayment of bills.

Electricity is free for consumers using up to 40 units of electricity per month with a connect load of below 500. Such consumers will be granted free electricity without considering their consumption. Consumers using up to 40 units of electricity per month with a connect load of below 1,000 are charged Rs 1.50 per unit. These consumers will be billed at the same rate disregarding their consumption.

  • Consumers using up to 50 units of electricity per month will be granted 50 percent subsidy in the increase in bill amount due to additional consumption.
  • Consumers using up to 100 units of electricity per month will be granted 30 percent subsidy in the increase in bill amount due to additional consumption.
  • Consumers using up to 150 units of electricity per month will be granted 25 percent subsidy in the increase in bill amount due to additional consumption.
  • Consumers using over 150 units of electricity per month will be granted 20 percent subsidy in the increase in bill amount due to additional consumption.
During lockdown, consumers were allowed to pay their electricity bill in 3 installments. This will be increased to 5. These steps will incur the KSEB an additional loss of around Rs 200 crore. However, around 90 lakh consumers will benefit from these steps.
