Union offices-turned-torture chambers present in colleges, says report
Thiruvananthapuram: An independent commission headed by Justice PK Shamsudeen reported that apart from the University College in Thiruvananthapuram, students’ union offices in other colleges also function as ‘torture chamber’ (Idi Muri). The detailed report of the commission will be submitted to the Governor on Monday.
Complaints of students not affiliated to any political parties are not taken into consideration in the colleges. Colleges become riot places with the support of political leaders, pointed out the report filed by the commission.
The commission was formed following the suicide attempt of a student on the University college campus. The commission in its report listed a few colleges which have torture chambers inside the campus. It is reported that such torture chambers are operated in Thiruvananthapuram Govt. Arts college, Ernakulam Maharaja’s College and Kozhikode Madappally College.
Students are not allowed to file complaint in most of the colleges where SFI is in power. The commission reported that students are restricted from contesting in students’ union elections on such campuses.
When the political parties are in power in the state, they used to ignore the political violence of their student outfits. It also resulted in political violence on campus, reported the commission.
