Uniform Holy Mass: Priests detain Thrissur archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath
Thrissur: The conflict of interests fuming among a section of priests, laity and church leaders over the mode of celebrating Holy Masses escalated to dramatic events and contestations in Thrissur and Ernakulam archdioceses on the eve of the implementation of Synod’s decision.
In Thrissur Bishop House, a group of priests detained Thrissur archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath demanding that the existing mode of delivering the Holy Mass speech facing the believers must continue. Police intervened to calm down the situation. Also, it is learnt that the Bishop has the support of the laity under the archdiocese over his decision to steadfast with Synod’s decision.
Meanwhile, under Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese, Archbishop Antony Kariyil, after meeting Vatican authorities, issued a circular saying the existing mode shall continue in the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese. However, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church Cardinal Mar George Alencherry in another circular clarified that he has not received any official intimation about this from the Vatican and reiterated that the new mode will be implemented from tomorrow onwards. This has sparked the debate over the power equation between both and whether Archbishop Antony Kariyil’s circular is valid.
Similarly, instances of protests have been reported from the Irinjalakuda diocese in the Thrissur district. It is learnt that the diocese will issue a circular soon.
Thrissur, Changanassery, Thamarassey and Palakkad archdioceses have issued circulars saying the new mode will be implemented.
