Uniform civil code: BJP move an election ploy, says Antony
New Delhi: Veteran Congress leader AK Antony said Sunday that BJP is trying to implement uniform civil code in the country because of the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
Noting that the BJP attempt to create communal conflicts in the country is suicidal, Antony said that BJP has always used the tactic of raising the issues of Ayodhya and Kashmir for fighting the elections on communal grounds.
"The same tactic is used now also. This move by BJP will result in communal polarisation only. Through such cheap tactics, the party is trying to garner more votes. This will result in communal riots all over the country including North India. The civil and criminal laws are equally applicable to everyone in the country. However personal law is different. The uniform civil code can be be a reality only when all the citizens in the country approve this. Trying to change the law without the approval of everyone is unpractical," he said.
Antony said that the BJP knows that a consensus with the support of everyone will not happen on this issue.
"The BJP shoud withdraw from playing such cheap politics eyeing elections. Prime Minister Modi should ask his partymen to withdraw from the move," he added.
