Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Police resorted to mass disciplinary action against cops of Mangalapuram police station in Thiruvananthapuram. All staff, except the sweeper in the station, were slapped with transfer orders on Friday. As many as 24 police officers were transferred on account of their alleged connections with goonda and mining mafias.
A goonda gang had hurled bombs at cops within the limits of Mangalapuram police station the other day. Soon, it was found that the officials of the police station themselves had facilitated the escape of assailants who threw the bomb. The disciplinary action has taken on the basis of this.
Rural district police chief D Shilpa suspended five police officers on Thursday. Grade sub inspectors Gopakumar, Anoop Kumar; grade ASI Jayan, senior civil police officers Sudhi Kumar and Kumar were suspended after finding their unholy nexus with mining mafias and goondas in the station limit. The other cops in the station were transferred following this.
A group of assailants kidnapped and thrashed a youth the other day. The police officers who arrived to rescue the youth were also attacked by the gang. On the way, the assailants brutally attacked Sreekumaran Nair, who is the brother of Chief Minister’s special private secretary and threw him into a nearby well. The investigation carried out by the rural police chief found that the cops failed to nab the accused on time. The locals had caught one of the assailants and entrusted him to the police. Another suspect was nabbed later.
The station house officer refrained from making necessary intervention even after taking the accused under custody. No attempts were made to impose goonda act against the recurring criminal activities within the station limits, noted the probe report.
Illegal soil mining activities
Mangalapuram is a locale from where soil is being illegally smuggled into the city limits in Thiruvananthapuram. It has been usual here to transfer officers who seize the vehicles carrying soil and attempt to impede the activities of mining mafias. The Intelligence wing had already reported the links of the cops in Mangalapuram police station with the goonda gangs here.
