Manichan
Chirayinkeezhu: A convict in the Kalluvathukkal hooch tragedy Manichan is unable to leave the prison even after his jail term was relaxed based on the recommendation of the state jail advisory committee. Manichan’s family has informed that they could not pay Rs 30 lakh fine to get released from the jail and approached the Supreme Court requesting to waive off this amount also.
With the hooch tragedy, the liquor kingpin's empire had fallen completely. Most of his properties were confiscated and the remaining were attached to avoid selling. Manichan’s wife Usha said that a lot of money was spent on conducting the case. Apart from the support from friends and family, money was collected from private financiers also.
Usha, her son Praveen and daughter Rani are currently residing in a relative’s house. Though small-scale trades were started to earn a living, nothing turned profitable, said Usha. The family informed that they have almost Rs 60 lakh debt and hope to repay it after selling the remaining properties once the legal procedures are finished.
The petition filed at the Supreme Court requests to discard the fine amount by considering his good conduct in prison, age, and ill health.
