Alappuzha: CPM in the district has revamped the leadership of the labour cooperative society that was set up in the format of the famous Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society Ltd (ULCCS) in Kozhikode.
It is boosting the sale of shares worth Rs 25. With the help of the society, the party aims to provide regular employment to 500 workers.
After the society's registration, not much progress was made in its work. The district leadership changed the leaders of the society to give it a boost. District committee member KR Bhageerathan was elected as the new chairman. District committee members M Sathyapalan and G Rajamma were chosen to be part of the top body of the society.
They contacted ULCCS and sought its help. The guidelines were altered based on the recommendations of ULCCS.
With C-class status, it has already constructed a few buildings for party-affiliated organisations and has also acquired some private contracts. It aims to raise the organisation to A-class status.
Though CPM has asked district committees to set up labour contract societies, only Thrissur has made some progress. It may be noted that labour contract societies can win government contracts even if the bid is 10 per cent higher than private firms.
The Uralungal society, started by Renaissance leader Vagbhatananda, is now under the control of CPM.
