Idukki: UDF-led Peruvanthanam panchayat has included its demand to hike honorarium of ward members in its agenda during the committee meeting here on Wednesday. The matter was discussed in the meeting and the administration has decided to urge the state government on the hike.

However, a dissenting view came to light when UDF members pointed out that the request must be intimated to the local self-government department. Three CPM members backed the decision while the other three put forth a dissenting note. First camp opined that the matter should be passed in the committee, while the other camp objected and said it cannot be approved. Later, the matter was passed with a not of dissent.

According to panchayat president, the objective was to highlight the matter before the state government. While CPM faction maintained that the matter does not come under panchayat’s ambit and taking such a decision is a wrong precedent. Though it was pointed out that hiking the honorarium should be done by state government, the administrative body did not heed to it, they alleged.
