UAPA is necessary, but should not be misused: Pinarayi
Kozhikode: Laws such as UAPA are necessary in the current situation prevailing in the country, but they should not be misused, said CPM politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan. He was responding to questions on slapping UAPA against party Kannur district secretary in the Kathirur Manoj murder case.
Pinarayi has approved UAPA in principle, while the Muslim League has taken a tough stance against such laws.
"To face threats like terrorism, UAPA is necessary. But it is being misused. Slapping UAPA on P Jayarajan is an example for that. UAPA was invoked in this case as bomb attack was involved. In Kannr, several such cases have been registered. People have even been killed in bomb attacks. But UAPA has not been invoked.
"Presently, those belonging to certain religion are portrayed as terrorists and UAPA is imposed on them. Action against Jayarajan is similar to that. It is part of a conspiracy. The state government and the Home Minister keep mum on the CBI's decision to please the RSS," Pinarayi said.
