UAPA arrest: CPM disowns accused, state secretariat claims Maoist links
Thiruvananthapuram: The CPM Kerala secretariat has decided not to intervene in the incident where two students were arrested from Kozhikode under UAPA charges over alleged Maoist links. It decided to let the probe team investigate the matter and that the government will not intervene in the issue in the meanwhile.
The CPM state secretariat also said that its district committee informed that the accused had Maoist links and the situation was critical.
Earlier on Monday, CPM state secretariat had said that during CPM’s reign no innocent will be charged with UAPA and hoped that the government will change its stance.
However, now the whole situation has turned upside down. Both the party and the government are of the stance that UAPA charges can’t be withdrawn. The probe team and court are firm on their stances of having strong evidences against the accused. Hence intervening in the issue and withdrawing the UAPA charges will result in serious consequences, the CPM secretariat evaluated.
Also as UAPA has been charged, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) can register suo moto case. If centre makes such a move it would result in allegations against the government. BJP may spread allegations like Kerala is being governed by a pro-Maoist government. Hence the issue should be handled very sensibly and the UAPA charges need not be withdrawn for now.
According to section 42 of UAPA, a monitoring committee has to be appointed. In Kerala, the committee is headed by retired High Court judge and former Law Secretary P. S. Gopinathan. Before the submission of the final charge sheet, the case will be presented before the committee. CPM state secretariat decided to let the committee decide on withdrawal of UAPA charges if required.
CPM Kozhikode district committee has handed over serious information regarding the accused. The arrested youth are prone to extremist ideas. It is suspected that thy have links to Maoist ideas, it said.
The youth are to be ousted from the party for now. But no action will be taken at this stage. If ousted party would be ditching them which should not happen. Also some of the party members are in support of the two accused. No decision will be taken to dishearten them as of now.
However, the CPM state secretariat has given permission to Kozhikode district committee to take an apt decision on the matter.
