Thrissur: Two of a family drowned while they were watching fishing in the water-logged paddy fields here. Three others with them were rescued by the locals.
Manakkodivalavil Kizhakkumpuram native K. G. Suresh (50) and his niece Anne Mariya (22) died in the mishap. Anne Mariya is the daughter of Suresh’s brother Wilson. Suresh’s younger brother Raju, Raju’s wife Sindhu and Anne Mariya’s brother Ebin Wilson were rescued by the locals.
The mishap took place on Monday by 6.30 in the evening near motor shed at Chettupuzha fields. As it was holiday, all of them went to watch fishing in the waterlogged field. While they were walking on the bund, Ebin slipped and fell into the water.
On Seeing this, Suresh jumped to the water to save him. Others also fell into the water during the attempt to rescue. There were strong currents in the water in the area. The locals heard their cries and came to rescue them.
Among them, Suresh was first taken out of water first, but his life could not be saved. Suresh had a bypass surgery only two months ago. Raju and Sindhu held on to the plants in the fields and were rescued by throwing ropes to them. Ebin also was rescued by the time.
When the locals were about to end the rescue mission, Ebin said that his sister also had fallen into the water. Scuba diving team of the fire force had arrived at the place in the meantime. Finally, Anne Mariya’s body was recovered by 7.45 pm.
Suresh was taken to Chandramathi Memorial hospital and Anne Rose to Jubilee Mission hospital to confirm death. Bodies are kept at the mortuary of Thrissur General Hospital.
Anne Rose, daughter of Wilson and late Jessy, was final year BTech student in Irinjalakkuda Christ Engineering College. Suresh was an electrician. He is survived by wife Jesni and daughters Femi and Meghna.
Ebin, a class 9 student, was in tears all the time as the mishap occurred after he fell into the water. “I slipped and fell into water. Suresh uncle jumped into water to save me… And I don’t remember anything after that…” he burst into tears. Ebin’s father Wilson also was struggling to hold back tears.
