Two more bodies retrieved from Kavalappara; toll hits 40
Nilambur: Rescue workers on Saturday retrieved two more bodies form the landslide site at Kavalappara here in Malappuram district. The death toll has now reached 40 with 19 more believed to be buried underground.
The two bodies were retrieved during search operations using heavy machinery including earth movers. One among them has been identified as army officer Vishnu. Despite dark clouds looming over the area, rains had been staying away on Saturday helping the search operations. However, rescue workers are making slow progress in retrieving the bodies.
The officials are trying to bring in GPRS devises to the spot to aid the search operations. Ground Penetrating Radar will be used to locate and zoom in on areas were bodies have been buried. A team of six technical experts will also assist in using the devises. If the GPRS devises prove useful, the rescue operations will become easier and efficient.
On Friday, five dead bodies were retrieved from Kavalappara where 19 residents are still missing while seven are still missing in Puthumala.
