Two killed in a bizarre accident on paddy field
Kottayam: Two workers had a tragic death on a paddy field when the work was under progress to start cultivation. The incident took place at Chozhiyakkadu paddy filed in Panachikkad here on Friday. Two tractor workers were killed after the tractor slid in the mud and slush. The deceased were identified as Aymanam native Sasi aka Moni (56) and Neelimangalam native Shinu aka Manikuttan (38).
Rojesh Thomas who led the farming activities in the field informed that four tractors were taken to the field to set the land for cultivation. Pumping of water to the field was scheduled on Saturday.
“The accident took place around 6 in the evening when the workers were about to leave. As it is a remote area, more people were not able to arrive for the rescue operations. Hence, other three tractors were engaged in the rescue operation. As the field was swamped by muddy water, they failed to lift the tractor which met with the accident," said Rojesh.
Muvattupuzha native Rojesh took the barren land spread over 50 acres for lease about a year ago. He sought permission of the land owners to start cultivation here. Though he planned to pump water to the field after ploughing it up, some people objected it. Following this, panchayat authority intervened in the matter and granted permission to start pumping on Saturday.
It is for the first time, the farmers’ organisation took initiative for farming here. Hence, the natives were also excited over the farming in the land which was left barren for 35 years.
