Malappuram: The Kondotty police have taken two youth into custody over a complaint that they tried to murder Customs preventive commissioner Sumith Kumar, who is investigating the gold and dollar smuggling cases.

The police have also seized a car in which the two were travelling. A special Customs team has been tasked with investigating the matter.

The car taken into custody by police is a Hyundai i20 owned by Abdul Gafoor. The two youth are natives of Mukkam. The complaint was that the youth used their car to dangerously follow the Customs officer’s vehicle and blocked the officer’s path.

The Kondotty police had registered an FIR after registering a case including sections pertaining to blocking path, negligent driving and preventing an officer from carrying out his official duty. Later, Sumith Kumar had alleged that the two had tried to murder him. However, the police are of the view that prima facie, the two youth did not have any such intentions.

The two youth are well educated and were heading to Malappuram. They have not given a clear answer as to why they followed the Customs commissioner’s car.

It is alleged that the youth followed Sumith Kumar’s car from Mukkam to Edavannappara and then until Kondotty. The police are subjecting them to detailed questioning. It is learned that Customs officials will also question the two. The officials are investigating if the two have any links with gold smuggling.
