Thiruvananthapuram: The bus stop near the College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram (CET), which sparked controversy at Sreekaryam here was demolished by the Corporation. In July, some members of the residents association had altered a steel bench at this bus stop into three single seats to prevent the boys and girls from sitting together. The protest of the CET students against this move grabbed the headlines after social media started discussing the incident.
Protesting against the move of the residents, second-year students including boys and girls of the college sat together on the seats and some on the laps of other students when they noticed the bench at the bus stop was partitioned into three separate seats.
Following the skirmishes between the residents and the students, Mayor Arya Rajendran had assured that a modernised bus waiting shelter will be constructed here soon. However, no action was taken even after a month. Meanwhile, the residence association renovated the bus stop again and washed off the pictures and slogans written by the students on the wall.
The Corporation has demolished this bus stop, citing that the recent construction under the residence association is illegal.
