Turnover of Rs 50.20 cr, livelihood for 330 families: Kudumbashree's ‘Kerala Chicken’ a hit
Kochi: The ‘Kerala Chicken’ project spearheaded by Kudumbashree turns out to be a hit by fetching Rs 50.20 crore since its kick-off in November 2017. The daily sale is around Rs 20 lakh and more than 25 lakh chickens have been sold through the project so far.
The ‘Kerala Chicken’ was launched to deliver good quality chicken to the public at reasonable rates. The project has been executed with the help of the animal welfare department, which is also the supervising authority.
By harnessing integrated farming, Kudumbashree is mainly involved in the distribution of chicken in the market, and the operation of chicken processing units. A venture called Kudumbashree Broiler Farmers Producer Company Limited (KBFPCL) has been instituted for this purpose.
At present, there are around 248 poultry farms and 82 sales centres across the state. They are in the six districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kollam, Thrissur, Kottayam and Kozhikode.
According to PA Sreevidya, executive director of Kudumbashree, the project provides a livelihood for more than 330 families. As a second phase of the project, Kudumbashree will expand the project to four more districts -Palakkad, Malappuram, Kannur and Alappuzha. Meanwhile, Kudumbashree is also planning to imbibe the remaining districts under the project.
