Thrissur: A 20-year-old woman and her friend have been arrested for stealing 7.5 sovereign gold ornaments and swindling bank deposits of Rs 8 lakh from her grandmother. The accused are identified as Abhijith (21 and Souparnika (21).
Sopuarnika has been living with her grandmother Leela (72) in Pallipuram.
She had stolen the jewellery kept in a bag at home and replaced it with fake gold. Later, with the help of her friend Abhijith, she convinced her grandmother to sign the bank deposit documents and withdraw Rs 8 lakh from a bank in Koorkkancheri. They used the money to buy a car.
She found that the gold she possessed was fake when she tried to replace her gold earrings at a jewellery in Thrissur. After returning home, she contacted her relatives, who examined the gold in her possession and found them to be fake. Later, Leela lodged a police complaint and the subsequent investigation led to the culprits. The police said that the accused committed the theft for a luxurious life.
