Kozhikode: Following bribery allegations, K. M. Shaji MLA is set to face fresh trouble regarding property tax from the Kozhikode Corporation. The MLA is likely to face follow-up action from the corporation after it was found that his house measured more than what was permitted.

The other day, officials from the Kozhikode Corporation measured the house of K. M. Shaji based on the direction of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The move comes in the wake of K. M. Shaji facing an investigation over the allegation that the MLA accepted a bribe of Rs 25 lakh to grant Plus Two at a school in Azhikode constituency in Kannur district.

The Kozhikode Corporation had granted permission to build a house of 3,200 square feet area. However, the house measured to be over 5,500 square feet. Though the complete plan was submitted in 2016, Shaji did not respond to the notice sent to regularise the construction which was undertaken without permission. As such the corporation did not grant a number to the house.

Corporation officials said that the additional construction has been undertaken on the third storey of the house.

A team of corporation officials led by Executive Engineer Ramesh Kumar measured the MLA’s house near Maloorkunnu on Thursday. The move was based on the ED directive seeking a report on the value of K. M. Shaji’s house. The report will be submitted on October 27.

The ED sought a report including the value of the house, total area and plan as part of its inquiry to find if the MLA had amassed wealth illegally.

Kannur block panchayat president Pamanabhan had filed a complaint with the Vigilance department that K. M. Shaji had taken a bribe of Rs 25 lakh to grant Plus Two at a school in Azhikode constituency. Based on this, the ED started an investigation to find out the MLA’s sources of income.
