Trial run when water level is at 2398 ft, says minister
Cheruthoni: Minister for electricity M. M. Mani said that the trial run will be held once the water level in Idukki dam reaches 2398 feet.
The trial run will help the public to be aware of the shutter opening procedures as the precautions and safety measures are already arranged. However, the dam need to be opened if the northeast monsoon intensifies, M. M. Mani said. He was addressing the media after the meeting at Collectorate.
The southwest monsoon is yet to complete the season and northeast monsoon is yet to arrive. The dam had been opened in similar situations earlier. Presently, the aim is to stage the trial run in order to remove the fear among people. If the dam needs to be opened later, people will have an awareness about the same.
An alert will be issued when water level reaches 2397 feet. Trial run will be staged at 2398 feet. A detailed discussion has been held with KSEB officials and others. It has been decided not to open the dam under present circumstances, the minister said.
Meanwhile, the water level in the dam continues to remain at 2396.12 feet for the past few hours. This indicates that the water flow has been reduced considerably and rain has stopped in the catchment areas.
