Thiruvananthapuram: The Union government has asked the Kerala government to strengthen the baby dam of Mullaperiyar. Secretary to the Union Water Resources Ministry sent a letter regarding this to the state secretary of the water resources department T K Jose.

Strengthening the baby dam is one of the prime demands of Tamil Nadu that has now turned controversial in Kerala. TN wants to increase the water level of the Mullaperiyar dam to 152 feet once the baby dam is strengthened. They were making moves to cut trees in the catchment areas after getting a go-ahead from Kerala. However, the state 'set aside' the order when it turned controversial.

The water resource minister of Tamil Nadu on Monday had said that the water level of the Mullaperiyar dam would be increased to 142 feet by November 30.
