The Devil's tree which emitted continuos smoke was cut down on Wednesday.
Tirur: The Pala tree (Devil's tree; Alstonia scholaris) on the roadside, which released continuous smoke raising concerns, was cut down on Wednesday. The 72-year-old giant tree stood beside the petrol bunk at North Thalakkad market. The roots of the plant still remain on the ground and the smoke continues to come out of it. The reasons are unknown.
Fire can be spotted beneath the ground, as we look closely into the tree. The reasons can be confirmed only after seeking expert opinion. The fire force had poured over 10,000 liters of water into the roots, trying to bring down the smoke, but with no results.
Sub Collector Sachin Yadav had issued an order to cut down the tree citing the potential threat it posed to pedestrians, nearby buildings and vehicles moving on the road.
SI Pradeep Kumar, Traffic ASI Muralidharan, Thalakkad Panchayath President P. Pushpa, and Vice President A.K. Babu was present at the spot for supervision.
People gathered to see the ‘amusing’ phenomenon and recorded the visuals on their mobile phones.
