Palakkad: Transport Commissioner S Sreejith has informed that strict action will be taken against the culprits behind the bus accident which claimed 9 lives at Vadakkencherry here on Wednesday. He pointed out that the overspeeding of the tourist bus ended up in a road mishap.
“The speed governor of the tourist bus was found altered during the inspection. The bus owner received two messages regarding the over speed minutes before the accident. When the accident took place, the bus was travelling at a speed of over 97 km per hour. The manufacturers of the speed governor installed on the bus allowed a maximum speed of 80 km per hour. But the speed governor was altered for increasing the speed to 100 km per hour,” said the transport commissioner.
He also noted the illegal modifications in the bus including lighting and woofer system.
“ Most of the educational institutions are demanding and preferring modified vehicles for excursions with children. All educational institutions and bus owners must take guard on avoiding road accidents. The authority of the institutions must inform the Motor Vehicle Department while planning tour programmes,” alerted the Transport Commissioner.
Most of the buses have been installing extra fittings which are easily removable during the inspection of MVD officials. After the inspection, the bus workers reinstall these fittings and resume service.
Strict action will be taken to nab the bus operators who violate the norms related to speed regulation.
