Kochi: The father of a Delhi native who arrived in Kerala to provide a statement before the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the 2023 Elathur train arson case was found hanging in a hostel room in Kochi on Friday.

The deceased is Shaheen Bagh native Muhammed Shafi (45), father of Muhammed Monis, who arrived in Kochi yesterday.

Shafi was found dead in the bathroom of a hotel room he was sharing with his son. A few days back, his son Monis received notification from NIA to appear before its office in Kochi for questioning in the case. Shafi came from Delhi to Kochi with four others.

On Thursday, Monis appeared before the officials and was allowed to leave to return for questioning on Friday. According to Monis, he contacted the hotel staff after his father failed to come out of the bathroom on Friday morning. Later, he was found dead in the bathroom.
