Indian Railways explains that the maintenance work on tracks in West Hill is the reason for this decision, but the non-conduct of services at least till Shornur remains questionable.

Kozhikode: Train No 16649 Mangalore Central – Nagercoil Jn Parasuram Express service will be completely halted from May 20 to 25 owing to the doubling of tracks along this route. Alappuzha-Kannur Executive Express will run only on Monday and Wednesday till May 20.

The disruption in services will affect the people travelling daily across the northern districts. There are many people who book season tickets and are dependent on these services as well. These trains may conduct services till Alappuzha or run partially till Kochi. The service timings may also be shifted for a few days. But the railway's decision to cancel services was taken without considering these alternatives.

Many of the passenger trains haven’t restored their halted services and certain trains don’t stop in small stations. All these pose a difficult situation for the people in Malabar region.

Timings of many services including Jan Shatabdi have been changed, but these do not affect the people as much as the other cancelled services.

Indian Railways explain that the maintenance work on tracks in West Hill is the reason for this decision, but the non-conduct of services at least till Shornur remains questionable.

“Railways is oblivious of the Malabar region that has only limited services. This is cruelty against passengers. This will lead to an increase in the number of passengers in train services that are conducted,” opined C E Chakkunni, State President of Confederation of All India Rail Users Association.

M K Gopinath, the Public Relations Officer at Southern Railway, Palakkad Division, said that - “The trains services were halted due to technical difficulties. The track doubling process has to be completed. The train services are stopped and rescheduled after conducting detailed studies. The decisions are taken in such a way as to reduce the inconvenience caused to passengers.”
