Vaikom: Motor Vehicle Department cancelled the fitness certificate of a tourist bus for violating regulations. The tourist bus was produced in the office of sub RTO in Vaikom and a certificate obtained prior to the excursion from a school in Kuruppanthara to Mysuru.
However, soon after crossing the state’s border, laser and colour lights accompanied with sound systems were fixed in the bus. The officials spotted this when the visuals from the bus were circulated via social media. Vaikom joint RTO PG Kishore intervened and stopped the bus.
The fitness certificate of the bus was cancelled and the department directed to cancel the driving licence of the driver.
MVD has ordered owners of tourist buses to produce the bus in the RTO office a week before heading for excursion. At present, buses have to be brought just before the trip. However, MVD granted exceptions in this rule, considering the troubles faced by the tour operators and bus owners.
The report of the scrutiny has to be kept in the bus itself. The inspections of the tourist buses were strengthened after the Vadakkencherry bus accident which claimed the lives of 9 passengers.
