Tourism dept to rank hotels with silver, gold, diamond, green status
Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has launched a project to rank hotels in the state as per its standard. Tourism Minister Muhammad Riyas inaugurated the project which aims to encourage responsible tourism. The ranks will be conferred based on environmental, social, economic and hygienic criteria. The hotels and restaurants will be entitled with silver, gold, diamond and green status.
The Responsible Tourism Mission will confer ranks to the hotels by considering its performance also in encouraging regional participation, promotion of local dishes, special priority to women and transgenders and so on. The list of the hotels that are classified will be available on the website of Kerala tourism and Responsible Tourism Mission.
Green classification certificate will be rendered to the hotels which obtained 80 percent score in environmental criteria. The hotels have to bring strict control on the greenhouse gas emission standards to achieve the green certificate. After issuing the green status, the government will endorse the hotels through its websites and offer more priority.
The facilities and details of the hotels will be made available on the special website which helps the tourist to select the hotels according to their preference. Homestays, houseboats and Ayurveda tourist centres that have already acquired the certificate of responsible tourism will be made known through the website.
The mission also focuses on innovative ways to realise financial benefits for the locals who reside in the vicinity of the hotels. Along with this, the procedures of application submission will be simplified and will soon switch to online mode.
The minister also added that caravan tourism and food on road will be introduced extensively in the state. Vaikom model food on wheels will be established in the selected centres of all districts in the state.
