Kozhikode: The corporation has lost Rs 15.24 crore from its accounts at the Punjab National Bank. Mayor Beena Philip said at a press conference that the bank had falsified the statements given to the corporation earlier.
The mayor said money from the corporation’s bank account started going missing in May and added that they did not know about this. The bank was informed of the fraud when the corporation noticed irregularities in the balance in one of its accounts, she said. Following this, the former senior manager said it was a mistake and offered to refund the money. After being suspicious of this, the corporation checked all its accounts at the PNB and found fraud, the mayor said.
Beena Philip said there is a discrepancy between the previous statement issued by the bank and the current one. In the earlier statement, there were no details about the money withdrawn from the accounts. It is clear that the bank has altered the statement, she added.
Money had been withdrawn from the corporation’s account even after the former senior manager’s transfer to Eranhipalam, she said. The mayor also stated it was clear that the message system was blocked so that the information of the money transfer was not known.
She said that the corporation has informed the bank’s Chennai division chief about the Rs 15.24 crore loss.
Deputy Mayor CP Musafar Ahammed said there had been no lapses on part of the corporation.
