Thrissur: Thrissur district police have strengthened the security in the town in connection with Thrissur Pooram, the world famous cultural extravaganza, on Monday. Compared to last years, police tightened security in the wake of terror attack threats following the serial blasts in Sri Lanka.
3,500 policemen from other districts have been deployed for security. Training was given to the policemen in Armed Reserve Camp at Ramavarmapuram. Following the training, they were taken to respective places of duty for a mock drill. This team is on duty since Sunday night.
Apart from them, Thunderbolt commandos are also deployed. A 160 member-team of bomb squad has also arrived at the spot.
All vehicles which cross the town will be inspected. Vehicles from other states will be subjected to strict inspection.
60 door frame metal detectors were installed at Thekkinkadu maidan. Everyone including VIPs have to pass through the metal detectors as part of the security check. 10 dog squads and central armed police force were also deployed here. Special system to detect and defuse bombs have been arranged at the Theakkinkadu maidan.
For surveillance, 80 CCTV cameras and binoculars are installed. Police will monitor nook and corner of the town through this arrangement.
Crisis management team will be ready to handle emergency situation at the Pooram venue.
The district police have issued a set of guidelines to the public in connection with the security of Pooram.
- Report police if bags are found abandoned in public places.

- Don’t climb on trees or damaged walls to watch pooram
- Don’t provoke elephants or take selfies with it
