Thrissur: The colourful and vibrant Thrissur Poom celebrated with traditional fervour concluded on Tuesday. ‘Upacharam Chollal’, the ceremony on Pakal Pooram day marked the official culmination of the Pooram festivities.
Elephants carrying idols of Thiruvambady Bhagavathy and Paramekkavu Bhagavathy paraded to the Sreemoolasthanam for Upacharam Chollal ceremony. The elephants stood face to face to bid farewell in the ceremony.
This year’s Thrissur Pooram erupted a controversy over parading the majestic elephant ‘Thechikottukavu Ramachandran’. Putting an end to the row, the district collector granted permission to parade the elephant for one hour long Pooram Vilambaram ritual. But the controversies over the elephant and terror attack threat never shaded the pomp and glory of the Pooram.
Following the Upacharam Chollal ceremony, a fire work display will be carried out at the Thekkinkadu maidan.
Braving the scorching summer, thousands of pooram lovers gathered at the maidan to witness the Pakal Pooram.
Over 3000 police personnel were deployed for the security of the Pooram. Women police were also on duty here. Assisted by police, pooram committee assured medical aid on time to the people who collapsed during the festivities.
This year’s Pooram was a great success as various government departments and voluntary associations joined hands for the mission.
