Thrissur: In a shocking incident, Thrissur Pooram venue witnessed a mishap after a tree branch fell over the people leaving two dead and several injured. Following the accident, the Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu devasom committees cancelled the fireworks. Both groups decided to cancel fireworks observing the unfortunate incident during the pooram.
When the accident took place, the arrangements for fireworks were completed. Hence, it was difficult to diffuse the explosives.
Observing this, both devaswom committees decided to destroy the explosives which were filled for the fireworks in the wee hours of Saturday. Thiruvambady destroyed the explosives by 5 on Saturday morning and Paramekkavu also completed it by 6 am.
At the same time, the devaswom committees decided to conduct ‘Pakal Pooram’ as a ritual only. Earlier, Thiruvambady group decided to conduct the procession with a single elephant and percussion. Following the accident, they cancelled the percussion.
Paramekkavu group planned to parade 15 elephants for the procession during ‘Pakal Pooram’ . Now, they also decided to limit the celebrations as rituals only.
The number of percussionists will be decreased. Both groups have decided that they will conduct the ‘Pakal Pooram’ by only observing the rituals without any celebrations. As the time for ‘Pakal Pooram’ was also cut short, ‘Upacharam Cholli Piriyal’ ritual will be completed by 10 am.
The accident took place on Friday midnight at the same place where ‘Madathil Varavu Panchavadyam’ performed. A huge branch of the banyan tree fell over the people who were gathered for the ‘Panchavadyam’ . Two, including Thiruvambady festival committee member Eravimangalam native Ramesh (56) and Poonkunnam native Radhakrishnan (65), were killed in the accident. Over 27 people including the percussionists suffered injuries.

The tree branch fell over the people amidst the ‘Ezhunellippu’ of Thiruvambady temple from Brahmaswam Madam to Naikkanal. Over 100 people gathered here for the Ezhunellippu ceremony. They managed to flee without getting trapped under the branch.
Tusker Kuttenkulangara Arjunan carried the idol of the deity. Though the elephant didn’t suffer injuries, its mahout sustained minor injuries. The tusker was immediately shifted from the spot.
The injured were admitted to Thrissur general hospital.
