Thrissur man strangles woman to death over not lending gold

Thrissur: A man has been taken into police custody after strangling a woman to death at her house in Thalikulam here on Wednesday morning. The deceased has been identified as 54-year-old woman Shajitha and Habeeb is under police custody.

Habeeb is an auto-rickshaw driver and Shajitha, who was living all alone used to depend on his vehicle for commutation. On the day of crime, Shajitha had called Habeeb and hired auto-rickshaw. The person reached Shajitha’s house and requested her to give gold, so that he can mortgage it. However, the woman turned down his request. Following that Habeeb locked the room and strangled the woman to death.

The neighbours happened to hear the screams and broke open the door only to see Shajitha unconscious. Meantime, Habeeb allegedly tried to flee from the scene. However, locals nabbed and handed him over to police.

Officials seized the gold from him, added reports.
