Thrissur Corporation to pay Rs 5 lakh as fine, Rs 4.56 cr as environmental compensation

Thrissur: The state pollution control board has directed Thrissur Corporation to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh every month for violating the solid waste management rules. The board issued a notice to the corporation in this regard on Wednesday. The corporation was also asked to pay environmental compensation amounting to Rs 4.56 crore.

The State Pollution Control Board has issued the notice to the corporation as part of implementing the order of National Green Tribunal.

Thrissur Corporation should pay Rs 5 lakh every month from April 1, 2020, reads the notice.

The notice was issued after observing a violation of rule number 26 in solid waste management rules, 2016. It is reported that violating the rule, the corporation disposed of solid waste in an unscientific manner while constructing Sports Complex in Laloor.

Earlier, the corporation approached the High Court when a fine of Rs 4.56 crore was imposed as environmental compensation.
