Thrissur: The police on Friday arrested six persons in connection with the theft of Rs 26 lakh from an ATM counter located in the heart of the Thrissur city.
The arrested include the main accused of the case Nikhil raj of Cherpu.
Two more persons are yet to be nabbed.
Sources said the police have recovered the stolen cash. The arrests will be recorded on Saturday.
The gang committed the crime by damaging the computer system of SBI ATM counter located between the Thrissur KSRTC stand and Sakthan stand on September 2 and it came to light after a week. They made use of the secret code that the bank officials used to change every month.
The investigators pursued the tipoff that the secret code was known to 12 persons and traced the gang.
However, the revelation about the code being known to 12 persons has sent a shock wave among those associated with the banking sector.
When banks used to manage the ATMs directly, only two officials knew the password and that too partially. The part of the code known to a person was never disclosed to the second one.
