Mangaluru: Three Malayalis were arrested here on Saturday for illegally smuggling gold worth Rs 2 crore via Mangaluru International airport. A total of 3.895 kilograms of gold was seized from them by customs officials.

Around 760 grams of gold, worth Rs 39,29,200, was also recovered from an abandoned bag in the area. The accused have been identified as Kasaragod natives Abdulla Farhan, Hashim Mubasheer and Muhammad Ali.

Reportedly, 650g gold worth Rs 33,60,500, 816g gold worth Rs 42,18,720 and 870g gold worth Rs 44,97,900 were seized from Abdulla, Hashim and Ali respectively.

The accused are passengers on a flight from Dubai, which arrived in Mangaluru on Sunday. The gold was smuggled in the form of thin wires covered with rhodium and was found hidden in a trolley bag, said the authorities.
