Tanur: The rescue operation at Thooval Theeram near here following the boat accident became challenging as the watercraft sank at night.
The boat, which was on a pleasure trip, suffered an accident during its last trip of the day. By the time the accident was reported, it had become dark. The accident happened around 6.30 pm on Sunday. At least 22 people are dead and several others critically injured in the accident.Onlookers suggest that around 35 people were on board, and many were relatives.
Natives began rescue operations before the arrival of the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services, but the crowd in the area hindered the rescue operation. The fire force units from Kozhikode and Malappuram and the disaster management forces arrived at the scene soon. They made efforts to lift the boat and bring it to shore.
Natives say the geographical peculiarities also were an obstacle to the operation. The water body is deep and the bottom is muddy.
Around eight people were rescued and taken to hospitals in Parappanangadi, Kottakkal, Tirur, and Tanur, with many of them in critical condition. The rescued people were from the Parappanangadi and Tanur regions. The beach was crowded with visitors due to the holiday. The accident happened while passengers were returning from the trip.
Thooval Theeram is situated on the banks of the estuary of the Poorapuzha river joining the Arabian Sea at Ottumpuram, on the Parappanangadi-Tanur municipal boundary.
