Thiruvananthapuram: The key accused in the tax evasion case in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has been arrested. It is learnt that the accused S Shanthi, superintendent of Nemom zonal office, appeared in the station as per the demand of police and her arrest was recorded later.
Shanthi, who was the state committee member of Corporation staff union, is the key accused in the Nemom zonal office scam. The district session’s court had already rejected her anticipatory bail plea and thereby she was absconding.
Among the tax evasion frauds, most of the cases took place in the Nemom zonal office. Rs 26,74,333 was swindled in this office alone. Following this, the opposition staged protests at Thiruvananthapuram corporation.
Police have already arrested S Sunitha, the cashier at Nemom regional office, in connection with the tax evasion fraud. On Friday evening, she was summoned for interrogation and the police recorded her arrest the next day.
The huge scam surfaced during the inspection by audit department. The cash collected at zonal office has to be deposited in the bank account of the corporation secretary. But it was found during the inspection that the money was amassed by the officers without depositing it in the account.
