Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan harshly criticised the police during a high level meeting of police officers here on Tuesday. He raised the criticism by pointing out the recent lapses by police.
"The high level officers in police had serious lapses in maintaining law and order at Sabarimala during the pilgrimage season. Many officers went on leave instead of taking up duty," he said.
The police failed to prepare well in advance to handle the situations when Manithi Sangham and others came to visit the temple. As a result of this, the situation went out of control, the Chief Minister said during the meeting held at police headquarters.
The Chief Minister also criticised the police in connection with the allegations of custodial death and torturing in custody. "The police should completely refrain from lockup torture. There should be considerable changes in the interaction of police with the public," he added.
The Chief Minister convened the high level meeting of police officers in the backdrop of recent allegations against the department.
