Kozhikode: The announcement made by members of the Panakkad Thangal family, including Muslim League state president Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, promoting Wafy-Wafiyya courses of the Coordination of Islamic Colleges (CIC) irked the EK faction of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, a prominent body of Sunni Islamic scholars of Kerala. Samastha is also the ideological patron of the Muslim League.
Sunni Yuvajana Sangham organising secretary and Samstha leader Abdul Hameed Faizy Ambalakadavu on Facebook asked community members not to send their wards to institutions that promote “anti-Samastha” ideologies. He was talking about CIC institutes.
“Don’t send your kids to institutions that teach that our ideology is orthodox and propagate that we need to embrace global Islam,” he said in the post. Ambalakkadavu also said there are many organisations that adhere to Samastha and offer multiple courses for boys and girls.
Samastha Kerala Sunni Students Federation has also distanced itself from the Wafy-Wafiyya courses.
Wafy-Wafiyya courses at CIC offer a combination of spiritual and temporal studies, for boys and girls. Samastha alleges that the courses deviate from the ideals of the organisation. They demanded Sadqali Shihab Thangal, who is the president of CIC, to remove Hakeem Faizy Adrisseri as the general secretary of CIC alleging that he is not obeying Samastha. Following this, Adrisseri submitted his resignation to Thangal.
The Mushavara (supreme body) of Samastha is likely to meet soon. Thangal is not a member of Mushavara. It is assumed that the meeting will take crucial decisions on the matter. The meeting has to also accept the resignation of Adrisseri for formalise it. Meanwhile, Adrisseri supporters alleged that those who decline to accept the leadership of Sadiq Ali Thangal was behind the campaign against Wafy-Wafiyya courses. Adrisseri had earlier said that he doubts if some leaders of Samastha are trying to overlook Sadiq Ali Thangal.
