Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the temperature is likely to go up to 38 degrees Celsius in Palakkad and 37 degrees Celsius in Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kozhikode districts on Saturday and Sunday. Yellow alerts have been issued in these districts.
According to the IMD, the increase in temperature in Kerala is around 2 - 4 degree Celsius higher than the normal rise. Due to high temperature and humidity, these districts, except hilly areas, are likely to experience hot and humid conditions.
Meanwhile, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has warned people to avoid direct exposure to sunlight from 11 am till 3 pm. Elderly people, pregnant women, children, differently-abled persons and those suffering from other diseases should be careful not to expose themselves to direct sunlight during this time.
Children or pet animals should not be left inside parked vehicles. Those involved in manufacturing activities, farming and street vending should avoid exposure to sunlight and should drink water to prevent dehydration. Coffee, tea and carbonated drinks should be avoided during the day.
Furthermore, the KSDMA also advised tourists and those living near forest areas to remain vigilant as there are possibilities of forest fires. Water availability must be ensured for students at educational institutions as well as birds and animals, KSDMA said.
